ART TAIPEI 2026

2026. 10. 29. - 11. 2.

Three individual practices, brought together through a shared attention to material, color, and the personal experiences that shape an artist’s work.

For ART TAIPEI 2026, Suppoment Gallery brings together works by Yoo Mi Seon, Kwon Hye Jo, and Kim Jihoon. Working across different generations, the three artists have developed independent approaches to painting, each with a strong sense of material and composition.

Yoo Mi Seon (b. 1959) works with traditional Korean hanji, stone powder, and gold and silver leaf. In her My Garden series, layers of material create surfaces that change subtly with the light. The reflective qualities of metal leaf sit alongside the tactile character of handmade paper, giving the paintings both delicacy and substance. Her work is grounded in the traditions of Korean painting, yet its strength lies in the precision and individuality of her material language.

Kwon Hye Jo (b. 1961) works without preliminary sketches, developing her paintings directly on the canvas. Color is central to her practice, and she mixes her own palette rather than relying on ready-made hues. Rounded forms, overlapping shapes, and fluid lines give her compositions a distinctive rhythm. Her paintings have an immediate visual presence, supported by a considered understanding of how colors and forms relate to one another.

Kim Jihoon (b. 1995) was born and is based on Jeju Island. The irregular forms in his paintings originate from the island's stones, particularly those found in its traditional stone walls. Rather than depicting the landscape, Kim transforms these familiar shapes into abstract compositions that reflect human relationships and personal memory. Stones become metaphors for individuals, each distinct yet connected to others.

His use of color is equally personal, informed in part by childhood memories of his grandmother and the traditional Korean garments she made. Kim also incorporates actual Jeju stone powder into his canvases, giving the paintings a physical connection to the place that continues to inform his work. In his From Emotion series, material, form, and memory come together without relying on literal representation.

The presentation places these three practices in conversation while allowing each to retain its own character. Yoo's layered surfaces, Kwon's assured handling of color, and Kim's abstract forms demonstrate the range of approaches found in contemporary Korean painting today.
